Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a list of commonly asked questions. As I cover a wide range of photographic subjects, these explanations are more general but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to ask something more specific or have thought of a question that isn’t covered here. Each shoot is unique and the approach can vary depending on the work you have in mind so I always welcome questions so that we can prepare for the best possible outcomes.

There are a number of different packages to suit different purposes and budgets. The one-hour shoot is the most popular package as it is suitable for such a wide range of purposes. It costs £250 and I provide at least 40 fully edited images (often a fair few more!). For more details and other packages please see our pricing section or get in touch if you’d like me to recommend the right package for what you’re looking for.

This cost will include an initial discussion about the sort of shots you have in mind and give you an opportunity to share any image references or requests for specific looks. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure what you might need – I can help advise on this once I am aware of the purpose of the images. The cost will obviously include the shoot itself at the location(s) you specify (I can also recommend locations if appropriate) using high-quality, professional FUJIFILM cameras and lenses. After the shoot, I will then select the final images and work on individually editing each image using professional software (Adobe Lightroom) to make sure they look the best they can and you have a collection of images that you’ll be proud to share.

I want to give you the best value though so I will always recommend the package that is most reasonable based on what you’re trying to achieve from the shoot. An hour-long shoot is ideal for many purposes and I’ll only leave when I’m satisfied that I have enough high quality images to deliver what you are looking for. Certain shoots, such as education shoots, or events will typically last longer but there may be instances when a cheaper mini-shoot might be best, such as a quick pet photoshoot!

I’m based in Otley in West Yorkshire. I’m happy to travel to shoot and won’t charge within a 15 mile radius in any direction. After that I charge just 50p per mile (plus £30 per complete hour of driving time). For longer jobs I am happy to travel a little further without charge so please get in touch if you would like to book me to take photos further afield. I have a valid passport if you have something adventurous in mind too!

No. The idea behind Natural Light Photography was to adopt a more candid, documentary-style approach to photography – I use high-end professional cameras and lenses but have little interest in staged or posed shots and prefer to adopt a more naturalistic approach. This doesn’t mean I won’t take headshots or even encourage the odd smile-at-the-camera picture though, I just won’t be setting up lighting rigs and asking you to pose in front of a backdrop or with a selection of props!

Obviously this will depend on the nature of the shoot but if it’s a commercial shoot just try to present your space as you’d like your customers to see it. Removing unnecessary clutter and making sure things are clean and tidy is really helpful and will avoid wasted time on the photoshoot. I like to get an idea from you of the sort of shots you have in mind beforehand and understand a little bit about how you intend to use the images which really helps with preparation.

I don’t like to dictate what people should or shouldn’t wear on a photoshoot – I want you to feel comfortable after all! One thing to consider on group family shots is to have clothes that are roughly coordinated but not matching. Subtle hues like pastel colours will often mix well and maybe avoid bright blocks of primary colours as this can dominate the image or cause unwanted colour casting on skin. You may want to consider the backgrounds you will be shooting against also. Top tip: Bring some clothes to change into – that way we can give the appearance of multiple shoots having taken place! This is particularly useful for press/promotional shots that you might want to share over the course of a campaign without the viewing feeling like they’re seen it before.

Cloudy weather isn’t an issue – it makes for flattering light for portraiture. Rain and high winds could potentially be a problem for outdoor shoots though! If this happens, don’t worry! I’m happy to find an alternative date and we can try again or plan to move the shoot indoors as an alternative or work with the weather we have – it can make for a unique and fun shoot to just got for it and battle the elements!

No. All images have been edited in my style and I provide high-resolution JPEGS of the finished images after they have been processed and adjustments have been made to present the shots in the best possible way.

I will do my very best to help you feel comfortable during the shoot. It is very common and natural to feel self-conscious when a camera is pointing at you – some people love it but other people really don’t. I’ve taken shoots with people who were quite nervous at first but my style is very relaxed and unobtrusive, and usually people soon forget that the camera is there or at least they manage to relax enough for it to appear that way! I’m not going to boss people around to achieve particular poses or anything – I mainly want you to feel like you are being yourself so we will have a chat, you can stand or sit where you feel comfortable or get on with an activity – whatever feels most natural is usually best.

I do basic retouching as part of my editing but in keeping with my approach to photography, I’m not keen on object removal or transforming images way beyond what was really there. I don’t use AI tools for generative fills for instance but I don’t mind occasionally removing a mark/stain or something subtle to clean an image. I want to present you in a good light obviously but I also want people and scenes to be recognisable!

Whenever I finish a photoshoot I’m always excited to get stuck into the edit and deliver the images to you. Typically I will turn around a shorter job within a week or less although all jobs will be completed within a two week period at the very latest.

Once I’ve completed the job you will be sent an email with a link to a gallery which will allow you to share and download your images. Any watermarks will be removed during the downloading process. The gallery will also include a range of professional-quality print options should you want physical copies or products of your favourite images.

Yes! These are available via the link to the final images. There are a range of sizes and types of prints available.

Typically a standard shoot in a single location will last one hour and this will be ideal for most purposes. For more information on this and other packages please see the pricing section for recommendations.

I have a particular style in mind. Can you help with that?

Absolutely! I love it when a client has a defined style in mind as long as they are able to show me examples of the sort of work they are looking for beforehand. I love shooting and editing creatively and emulating a style offers a fun challenge as a photographer. I would recommend looking at my galleries also – if there’s a particular image or set of images you love then this would be a helpful starting point also.

Yes! This is actually very helpful if you have something very specific in mind or even just something to indicate a general aesthetic or look.

Definitely. For most commercial work, I deliver stylish images that are crisp, clean and modern with rich, vibrant colours. My approach to family/occasions is typically a little softer with more muted colour palettes and for live music/artist press shots I love to experiment with filmic looks to bring grit and character to the images. I am aware that every photoshoot is different – a different subject, a different setting, different light conditions – all of these factors are considerations when I’m shooting and editing to bring out the best in your images. Feel free to offer input or leave those decisions entirely up to me if you prefer.

I have been shooting with FUJIFILM cameras for close to a decade now and have replaced my beloved first FUJIFILM camera (XT-20)with the XT-5 which now gives me a 40mp sensor alongside FUJI’s famously beautiful colour rendering. Indeed, much of my editing work is based upon FUJI’s unique film simulations which aren’t available in other camera series.

I primarily shoot with high quality prime lenses which offer superb optics at fixed focal lengths (that’s why you’ll see me changing lenses rather than zooming in and out!) but do also own a couple of great quality zoom lenses in case the moment requires this.

Occasionally! The vast majority of my experience in photography has been taking photos of people although I do still enjoy capturing landscape and nature scenes too. I do own some wide angle lenses which work well for capturing these kind of shots but I mainly shoot these for pleasure.

I have taken some photos of smaller  sporting activities as part of an educational photoshoot for instance where they don’t mind me getting on the pitch to take my photos! I wouldn’t honestly describe myself as a ‘sports photographer’ though. My interest in photography began with taking family photos so my lens collection has evolved from there – there’s never been a need for telephoto lens in my collection for the sorts of work I do as I’m always relatively close to the subject.

This is a question that people sometimes ask. It’s true that phone cameras have certainly improved in recent years and I know some photographers who have had images published that they’ve taken on their phones! Camera phones can be great for getting good snaps but a professional level camera with interchangeable lenses offers a number of advantages. One of the main differences is in the detail and clarity of the images captured by the larger sensors of a dedicated camera – this allows you to crop or enlarge images without a noticeable loss of quality. Different lenses also offer different focal lengths and perspectives which cannot be replicated by a phone camera, as well as more versatility to experiment with depth of field and to achieve great images in different lighting conditions. In short…cameraphones are good but they’re not that good, especially if you want to use the images for different purposes other than viewing on your phone. Have a browse of the gallery section and hopefully you’ll see the difference!
